From the Volo Archives

I subscribed to the Daily Herald newspaper archive, which for only $40 a year, gives you access to many past Daily Herald newspapers (and its predecessors).

Every now and then I'll post something fun from Volo's past. The first is an article from May 16, 1994, around the time that the 120 bypass opened. Pay particular attention to the before and after maps. I had no idea that Gilmer and 12 actually intersected at one time.

New Bypass Helps Breathe Fresh Life Into Small Town

I also now live in Volo, at Remington Point. My Grandfather owned a summer home on Fox Lake. I spent every summer of my childhood up here. At the age of 15-16 in the late 60’s I was exploring all of these empty roads.

Now almost 50 years later again I am exploring all of these changed roads anew. I still love the area and welcome all of the progress, but not the taxes.

Keep up the informative Blog.

Yep, Gilmer Rd. and Route 12 used to intersect in 4 directions. However, technically, Gilmer and Route 12 still connect right in the Fratello's parking lot. If you ever drive on the side road past Bobby's and into Fratello's, you'll notice that road is Gilmer Rd. which ends at Route 12 (but used to connect all the way through.
